Top Interview Questions for Systems Administrators

Use these to evaluate infrastructure depth and security posture, or let us handle the technical screen for you.

Describe your experience managing both Windows Server and Linux environments. How do your day-to-day responsibilities differ across each?

Strong candidates articulate the operational differences clearly — Group Policy, Active Directory, and PowerShell on the Windows side; systemd, cron, and package management on Linux. Look for admins who are genuinely comfortable in both environments rather than those who give a surface-level answer. Candidates who have only managed one platform may struggle in hybrid environments.

How do you approach backup strategy and disaster recovery planning for a critical server environment?

Look for a tiered backup approach: daily incrementals, weekly fulls, off-site or cloud replication, and tested restore procedures. Strong candidates define RPO and RTO for different system classes and describe how they've validated their DR plan — not just that one exists. Admins who have never tested a restore are a risk regardless of what their backup configuration looks like.

How do you approach patch management across a mixed server environment, and how do you balance security with uptime requirements?

Strong candidates describe a structured patch cycle: testing in a non-production environment, staged rollouts by criticality, maintenance window coordination with application owners, and rollback procedures for failed patches. Look for awareness of the tension between patching quickly for security and minimizing change risk for production systems — and a process for navigating that tradeoff.

Walk me through how you would investigate and resolve a server performance issue impacting end users.

Look for a systematic diagnostic sequence: check CPU, memory, disk I/O, and network utilization at the OS level; review application and system event logs; correlate timing with scheduled tasks or recent changes; and isolate whether the issue is application, OS, or hardware. Candidates who start by rebooting the server without investigation signal they're substituting luck for diagnosis.

How do you manage user access and enforce least-privilege principles across Active Directory and cloud environments?

Strong candidates describe role-based access control, regular access reviews, service account management, privileged access workstations, and MFA enforcement. In hybrid environments, look for experience with Azure AD/Entra ID, Conditional Access policies, and synchronization management. Admins who grant broad permissions for convenience create the attack surface that adversaries exploit.

How do you use scripting or configuration management to automate repetitive administrative tasks?

Look for hands-on PowerShell or Bash scripting for real operational tasks: user provisioning, report generation, log parsing, scheduled maintenance jobs. More senior admins should describe configuration management tool experience (Ansible, Puppet, Chef) for managing server configurations at scale. Candidates who manually perform repetitive tasks that could be scripted signal they aren't investing in the operational leverage that keeps infrastructure manageable as it grows.
