Strong candidates describe an SLA-based framework: business impact, number of users affected, and data integrity risk. Look for familiarity with incident management tools and escalation paths rather than ad hoc gut-feel approaches.
Walk me through how you would troubleshoot an application that's intermittently failing for a subset of users.
Listen for a systematic methodology: isolate common variables (network, browser, OS, user role/permissions), reproduce the issue in a lower environment, check logs, and document findings. Analysts who jump straight to "reinstall" signal limited depth.
Describe your experience writing or maintaining runbooks and support documentation.
Quality candidates treat documentation as a deliverable, not an afterthought. Look for examples of step-by-step runbooks, known error databases, or KB articles that reduced repeat ticket volume. Familiarity with Confluence or similar platforms is a plus.
How have you handled a situation where a vendor or third-party integration was the root cause of an incident?
Experienced analysts demonstrate clear vendor escalation paths, SLA tracking, and internal communication to stakeholders while a third-party fix is in progress. Candidates who have no answer here may lack enterprise integration exposure.
What monitoring or alerting tools have you used, and how did you respond to automated alerts?
Look for hands-on experience with tools like Splunk, Datadog, or PagerDuty — not just passive observation. Strong answers cover alert tuning, on-call rotation, and building dashboards to surface leading indicators before users report issues.
How do you manage communication with non-technical stakeholders during an outage or major incident?
Top performers can translate technical status into plain-language updates, set accurate ETA expectations, and know when to escalate to management. This question separates analysts who can own incidents end-to-end from those who only work the queue.
