Walk me through how you would diagnose and resolve a computer that powers on but won't boot into Windows.
Strong candidates describe a systematic approach: check POST beep codes and BIOS, assess boot order, attempt safe mode or recovery environment, check disk health with diagnostics tools, and evaluate whether the issue is hardware or OS. Candidates who jump straight to reinstalling Windows signal limited diagnostic depth.
Describe your experience with system imaging and deployment tools. How have you managed large-scale PC refreshes?
Look for hands-on experience with tools like SCCM/Intune, Ghost, Clonezilla, or WDS. Strong candidates describe building and maintaining base images, managing driver injection, and handling post-deployment user data migration. Experience with MDM tools signals readiness for modern enterprise environments.
How do you explain a complex technical issue to a non-technical end user?
This separates technically strong candidates from those who can also deliver quality support. Look for use of plain language analogies, checking for understanding, avoiding jargon, and following up to confirm the issue is resolved. Technicians who can't communicate clearly create repeat tickets and frustrated users.
What steps do you take when a user reports potential malware or suspicious activity on their machine?
Mature technicians describe isolation first (disconnect from network), then scanning with updated tools, documenting findings, escalating to security if needed, and following established incident response procedures. Candidates who skip isolation or escalation protocols signal a gap in security awareness.
How do you prioritize and manage a high volume of support tickets when multiple urgent requests come in simultaneously?
Look for an SLA-aware framework: business impact, number of users affected, and whether a workaround exists. Strong candidates reference ticketing systems (ServiceNow, Jira, Zendesk), communication to stakeholders about ETA, and escalation paths for issues beyond their scope.
Describe your experience with Active Directory and user account management. What tasks have you handled day-to-day?
Look for hands-on AD work: creating and modifying user accounts, resetting passwords, managing group policies, joining machines to domains, and troubleshooting authentication issues. Candidates with Azure AD / Entra ID experience signal readiness for hybrid and cloud-first environments.
