Look for hands-on NgRx experience including effects, selectors, and entity adapters — not just awareness that it exists.
Explain how Angular handles data binding and change detection. How do you optimize it in performance-critical applications?
Look for clear explanation of one-way and two-way binding, Zone.js, and the default vs. OnPush change detection strategies. Strong candidates describe using OnPush with immutable data patterns, running code outside Zone.js with NgZone.runOutsideAngular(), and using trackBy functions in ngFor loops — not just knowing that OnPush "is faster."
What is your process for optimizing Angular application performance — both initial load and runtime?
Mature developers describe lazy loading modules, preloading strategies, tree shaking, bundle analysis with webpack-bundle-analyzer, Server-Side Rendering (Angular Universal), image optimization, and caching strategies. Candidates who only mention "lazy loading" without addressing runtime performance signal limited production optimization experience.
Describe your approach to unit testing Angular components. What do you test and what do you deliberately avoid testing?
Strong candidates describe testing component behavior (not implementation details), using TestBed for dependency injection, mocking services with jasmine spies or jest mocks, and testing template interactions via DebugElement. Look for awareness of what not to test — Angular internals, implementation details — which signals test writing maturity rather than coverage-chasing.
How do you structure a large Angular application to keep it maintainable as the team and codebase grow?
Look for a feature module structure, shared/core module separation, barrel exports, consistent naming conventions, and awareness of Angular's standalone component approach introduced in Angular 14+. Candidates who have never thought about module organization beyond what the Angular CLI scaffolds signal they haven't worked on large-scale applications.
How do you handle API integration, error handling, and loading states in an Angular application?
Strong candidates describe using HttpClient with interceptors for auth headers, retry logic, and global error handling, combined with RxJS operators (catchError, retry, switchMap) and structured loading state management. Look for awareness of race conditions in concurrent requests and proper subscription management to prevent memory leaks.
