LOCATION: NJ/Dallas or Remote

The Business Intelligence Developer (BID) works with management, team members, and department leads to design and develop solutions to solve complex problems and/or deliver actionable insights and reporting to the business. This role combines the proper tools available and their vast skillset to craft the right solution for the task at hand. This role is a go-to resource for other team members to help them resolve technology issues such as complex query design and development, performance challenges, and overall best practices for BI solution design. The Business Intelligence Developer (BID) works with other members of the IT department to make improvements to our data architecture and BI platforms to advance the current and future goals of the department. 


  • Solution Design and Development
    • Work with management, team members, and department leads to design and develop BI solutions to solve complex business needs using the right combination of tools available or recommend other tools to use if necessary. The current technology stack includes SQL Server, Tableau, SSRS, Microsoft Excel, SSIS, and other ancillary tools.
    • Lend development expertise to other members of the team to build components that would be beneficial to solutions for areas they support 
    • Implement the appropriate level of unit testing to ensure that the solutions are implemented with minimal errors.
    • Produce the appropriate level of documentation necessary to transfer the ongoing support and maintenance of solutions developed to other members of the Analytics team where appropriate.
    • Adhere to the appropriate design and development practices to minimize errors and ensure exceptional code performance.
    • As time permits, experiment with existing and emerging technologies to aid in the forward advancement of the department in the areas of data science and advanced analytics such as R, Python
  • Miscellaneous
    • Maintain both a macro and micro perspective to ensure that the solutions designed keep with the goals and objectives of the department and organization.
    • Provide assistance to team members on various projects and initiatives as needed
    • Provide timely status updates to management. 
    • Communicate problems with reports, processes and supported tools or platforms to key stakeholders, including management, development teams, and other methods. 
    • Support the training department by training the trainer or technical support staff to use systems
    • Maintain professional and technical knowledge by attending workshops and training events and reviewing professional publications.
  • Proven ability to design and develop useful solutions using available tools
  • Strong Tableau solution design and development skills. This includes but is not limited to developing worksheets and dashboards with various chart types, LOD expressions, calculated fields using expressions, groups/sets, parameters, and actions.
  • Experienced in the maintenance and administration of Tableau Server. This includes deployments and updates as well as having a good understanding of user account maintenance and object-level permissions for users/groups.
  • Strong experience creating reporting and BI solutions using a top-tier reporting or visualization platform (preferably Tableau, Power BI or SSRS).
  • Strong experience in the design, development, and/or advanced querying of data warehouses or smaller data components such as data marts or cubes.
  • Strong data analysis skills using tools such as Microsoft SQL Server and Excel. Experience with more advanced tools is welcome but not a substitute.
  • Strong database development and design experience with Microsoft SQL Server including but not limited to creating tables, views, and CTEs as well as writing functions and procedures containing transactional statements and error handling.
  • Ability to create complex queries using joins, subqueries, function calls if necessary, etc to facilitate analysis, development, and troubleshooting
  • Ability to troubleshoot, diagnose, and resolve performance issues through redesign or tuning of queries and indexes used in existing processes
  • Advanced Microsoft Excel skills
  • Problem solving ability to analyze and challenge conventional thought processes and use experience and/or intuition to create pragmatic solutions
  • Excellent analytic skills, attention to detail, and ability to work within time constraints.
  • Excellent level of oral and written communication skills. Ability to communicate across a variety of audiences.
  • Exposure to and interest in programming languages used for modern analytics and data science (Python, R, JavaScript, Scala, etc.)
  • Innate curiosity to explore and tinker with new technologies and to learn new things
  • Intermediate level of computer skills and the ability to function in a windows environment utilizing Outlook, Word and Excel.
  • Professional and effective interpersonal skills. Solid decision-making skills with display of professionalism in maintaining confidentiality.
  • Ability to rapidly acquire detailed knowledge of departmental policies, practices and procedures.
  • Strong time management skills, fast learner, self-motivated, and comfortable taking initiative and handling multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration, Computer Science, Finance, or Information Systems preferred
  • 3-5 (three-five) years related experience with business and technical requirements, analysis, elicitations, modeling, verification, and methodology development.
  • Proven experience with troubleshooting IT principles, methodologies and issue resolution techniques.
