Our client is looking for an experienced Microsoft Windows desktop management and optimization engineer with a passion for, and in-depth experience in, designing, building, deploying and supporting best-in-class enterprise-level Microsoft desktop solutions.
The seasoned Windows Desktop Engineer will be challenged to ensure the enterprise’s desktop environment offers the highest level of reliability and performance in the most efficient manner. The incumbent will provide senior strategic and technical leadership through all project stages for small and large scale desktop software deployments, migrations and upgrades.
The ideal candidate will have a proven track record in the following five areas:
- Create and manage desktop images using any tool, but preferably SCCM 2007
- Create custom MSI packages using Wise
- Design and configure desktop virtualization app to run applications that may not be compatible with a new OS, Office or IE version
- Involvement in Office 2007 upgrades, including testing apps and modifying application settings
- Ability to articulate a strategic view toward designing and building an optimal desktop environment
Job Responsibilities:
- Lead the effort to upgrade current environment to Windows 7, Office 2007 and IE 8, including using available technologies to address legacy apps that are not compatible
- Develop process and own image management for XP/Windows 7 images
- Evaluate, test, and package all client facing applications using Wise Package Studio or other industry standard tool for distribution through SMS/SCCM 2007
- Proactively develop scripts for deployments, troubleshooting and maintenance
- Manage critical desktop patching/updates
- Recommend, implement and maintain tools for automated laptop, desktop, and software inventory and metering
- Partner with Infrastructure Engineering team for client facing Group Policy deployment and modification
- Manage desktop Trend antivirus monitoring, maintenance, and updates
- Provide 3rd level ticket resolution of laptop/desktop issues
- Recommend and test all new laptop/desktop hardware
- Provide detailed documentation on all engineering analysis, recommendations and solutions
- Proactively research and recommend desktop/laptop performance enhancements, leveraging tools offered for HP desktops and Lenovo laptops.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Technical Abilities:
- Since this position is the sole desktop engineer, it is crucial that the person be highly seasoned, well rounded and simultaneously strategic and detail-oriented.
- Thorough understanding of current desktop technologies and the ability to analyze potential organizational benefits and risks
- Exposure to multiple levels of internal controls (Sarbanes-Oxley) as well as having worked in a change control environment
- Excellent project management and interpersonal skills
- Thorough knowledge and expertise of current infrastructure technologies including, but not limited to:
- MS Windows 2000, XP, Vista and Windows 7
- MS Office XP, 2003, and 2007
- SMS 2003/SCCM 2007
- Wise Package Studio or other software packaging tool
- Desktop management tools and concepts and image creation and management tools and concepts for Zero Touch Installation (ZTI) and Lite Touch Installation (LTI) deployment processes including:
- Microsoft Desktop Optimization Pack (MDOP) especially App-V.
- Microsoft Deployment/Business Desktop Deployment (BDD), unattended setup answer files, Windows System Image Manager (Windows SIM), Windows Automated Installation Kit (Windows AIK), Microsoft Visual Basic Scripting Edition (VBScript).
- MS application compatibility toolkit (ACT 5) and similar tools
- Enterprise desktop anti-virus (Trend experience a major plus)
- Scripting and automation methods
- HP desktop, Lenovo laptop troubleshooting
- Application virtualization solutions such as Microsoft Application Virtualization
- Networking services infrastructure including DHCP, TCP/IP, WINS, DNS
- Active Directory 2000/2003 service infrastructure, including logical and physical infrastructure
- Windows client/server networking.
- Microsoft Group Policy (a plus)
- Citrix (a plus)
- WSUS 2.0/3.0 (a plus)
- SQL Queries (a plus)
Education and Work Experience
- BS degree in a computer/engineering related field
- Minimum 5 years experience in a Windows Desktop Engineering role
- Consultancy, vendor or large enterprise experience
